Here is a list of "Must Have Items Before Baby Comes"
There are lots on the market, but my favorite is the Co-sleeper. It breaks down easy for storage and doubles as a pack-n-play for traveling. This one comes with extensions so the baby can sleep level with your bed.
An actual crib is not something I can recommend because that depends mainly on your style, but if you have one, then you most likely will need a crib mattress. There is a lot of controversy concerning the chemicals used on crib mattresses and it's link to SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). We bought a Naturpedic Organic Crib Mattress for a number of reasons, but the fact that it is organic, no chemicals are used, and waterproof sold me!
These articles support my opinion and will help you make your decision.

Having a waterproof mattress/pad cover for both crib and pack-n-plays are important. If baby pees, spits up or drools, the liquid can get trapped in the mattress/pad and cause fungus and mold to grow... not good!! Also, mattress/pack-n-play pads are sprayed with fire retardant and other chemicals which I believe is linked to SIDS. I recommend an organic waterproof play yard cover and organic play yard sheets that are chemical free! This will create a nice barrier to all the unwanted chemicals your baby is surrounded by most of the day.
You know you can't leave the hospital without a car seat! My favorites are:
Graco Sungride Infant Car Seat - so easy to buckle in and adjust straps
Recaro Car Seat - This is the one we have for our toddler that and is used as a forward facing seat - it is so comfy
Recaro Combination to Booster Seat - pretty much an all-in-one seat so you really get your moneys worth - this will be our next purchase!
The BOB Revolution - I don't know a mom who doesn't LOVE her BOB... I have the Dualie and it's effortless to run with. Make sure the one you get has a swivel wheel!
Graco Lightweight Stroller - Love how easy this is to fold up and toss in the trunk, yet there is room under the stroller, a canopy, snack tray, and reclines!
Homedics Lullaby for kids - this one has a projector so your little one can see images on the ceiling. My toddler always plays the "rain" sound for naps and bedtime.
Homedics Sound Spa - This one is in our room and
Travel Sound Machine - We used this in the car or downstairs in the pack-n-play
Newborns are soothed to sleep from white noise because they are used to hearing loud constant noise in the womb. The sound machine also drowns out noises like the door bell or barking which might startle little ones and wake them.
Graco - Least expensive pack-n-play with great reviews
Newborn Napper Station - Provides an upright little bed to help babies with reflux
Summer Infant - This is the one we have - The fabric is super soft and the colors are gender neutral
Pack-N-Plays are so versatile! We use the pack-n-play as a changing station downstairs for the baby. I feel safe placing the baby in here verses on the floor or in a swing where my toddler can reach him. It's also a great play area and contains toys for the mobile infant. It is so easy to pack up when we travel and my toddler still loves to sleep in one on vacation.
By far, Aden & Anais swaddle blankets are the best! Swaddling helps newborns feel safe and secure. These can also be used a burp cloth, nursing cover, or a light summer blanket
Summer Infant Video Monitor - Zooms so you can see your little on up close. I have it in my toddlers room too and it moves so I can see what he's doing when he's not sleeping
I can't recommend having an infant carrier enough! When my boys were newborns, they would fall asleep within minutes of being carried around while I did housework (vacuuming was the best)
Bijorn - #1 carrier I recommend. Really easy to put on and easy for dad to figure out too
Maya Wrap - Perfect for newborns and keeps them bundled tight. Really easy to put on and adjust.
Moby Wrap - Fabric is amazing and doesn't pull on my shoulders
Ego Baby - I don't personally have this one, but everyone who does RAVES about how awesome it is
Boppy is my favorite - I love the cute organic boppy covers that go along with this too. It was so comfortable to nurse and I don't know a new mama that doesn't totally recommend using a Boppy!
Petunia Pickle Bottom Boxy Backpack - This is probably the most popular and most loved diaper bag I've seen.
Petunia Pickle Bottom Weekender - This one is huge and the one I currently carry. It fits everything (a change of clothes for both kids, juice, snacks, water bottles)... you name it!
Vera Bradley - I love the soft quilted material and 11 pockets!!
StorkSak - This one is so stylish and looks like an everyday tote.
Last but not least.... Diapers!
Disposable - Seventh Generation - And Amazon will take an additional 30% off with no tax or shipping!!!
